Collaborations in Electives

The electives focus on the contemporary practice of editors, curators and imagemakers. Students will also be introduced to the professional field by means of visits to exhibitions and institutions for the presentation of their project. Students develop their own academic research project, which may consist of a proposal for a film programme or a photography exhibition.

Curating Film and Video

This course will examine both the ‘filmic turn’ in recent art practice (i.e. the so-called artist’s film) and current curatorial practices concerning the projected and moving image. The course will consist of a series of seminar meetings in which critical literature is examined and students develop their own academic research project, which may consist of a proposal for a film programme in collaboration with several institutions, including the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven), EYE Film Museum (Amsterdam), Film and Video Archive LI-MA (Amsterdam), Film Festival IMPAKT (Utrecht) and International Film Festival Rotterdam (Rotterdam). Students will also be introduced to the professional field by means of visits to exhibitions and institutions for the presentation and research of moving images.

Editorial and Curatorial Training Programme

ECTP focuses on the contemporary practice of editors, curators and imagemakers involved in creating documentary projects for multiple platforms. During this elective, the students will be introduced to several professional fields in which they after graduation can become active in. The students will be confronted with the work of contemporary photographers with a documentary background, where they will talk about the everyday challenges of these professionals. The students will also visit a festival or museum. Main points of interest are the choices made by this particular institution regarding the functions of the museum (conservation, presentation, education, research). Students are confronted with the curator’s responsibility of getting involved with the work of imagemakers. When being introduced to designers, the students are provided insight into the role of designers with regard to curatorial practice. During this elective, attention will also be shown to funding. This represents the final stage of the programme: developing a project that will have to be able to function independently as well as (partly) integrated on multiple platforms.
